This project is an alteration and addition to an Ainslie duplex that had previously been extended. The work involved creating a new kitchen and laundry, converting the garage into the master bedroom and improving the link with the previous additions at the back of the house. Also, significant work was done to create two courtyards as integral spaces with the adjacent living areas of the house. The landscaping of the courtyards is yet to be completed. Key elements to the redesign of the courtyards have been the extension of the eaves around them as a unifying element and the introduction of a water feature. This water feature also acts as a stair and seating bench and is integrated with the doors to the kitchen. When the sliding doors are open the cool moist breeze and the sound of the running water become part of the kitchen and heighten the connection with the courtyard.
