The project involved the alteration and addition to an Aranda House built in 1970. The client’s brief was to replace the sunroom,
added in 1981, with a more generous and comfortable space, and to upgrade the finishes to the adjacent living areas as well as the
kitchen, laundry and storeroom. The brief also required a better relationship between these spaces and the garden.
The
architectural expression we strove to achieve is as follows:
· Seamless integration
between the new and existing.
· Spaciousness and light by creating vertical space,
bringing in natural light in different ways and opening up spaces, and
· Linking
with the garden through uninterrupted views and unexpected glimpses into a hidden courtyard.
Simple details and minimal structural
changes were employed to keep construction costs down. The project was clearly and comprehensively documented to minimise undue and
unexpected variations from the builder.
